SEO 404 Redirect changelog

What’s new in SEO 404 Redirect?

New features, improvements and fixes in SEO 404 Redirect, newest first.

  1. October 2026
  2. October 2026: wildcard rules, CSV import, AI matching and the link scanner

Development update: fix whole URL patterns with wildcard rules, bring a redirect map in by CSV, let AI pick pages from your catalog, and scan your own links for dead ends.

    • Wildcard rules: prefix, wildcard and regex rules for whole URL patterns, applied in order. Rule analytics show which URLs each rule caught.
    • CSV import and export: bring a redirect map from your old platform, in Shopify’s “Redirect from, Redirect to” format or any two columns. Every row is checked before anything is created.
    • Bulk tools: apply suggested matches in bulk, and redirect, ignore or delete many 404s at once.
    • AI-assisted matching: AI picks the best page from your own catalog and never invents a URL. Matches below your threshold wait for your review.
    • Internal link scanner: checks menus, product and collection descriptions, pages and blog posts for links to pages that no longer exist.
    • Emails: a Monday summary of what broke and what was fixed, plus an optional daily alert for new 404s.
    • Plans: Free, Pro and Business, billed through Shopify, with a 7-day free trial on your first paid plan. Help & Support is in the app.

  3. QA: tests and the review checklist

Development update: automated tests for tracking, matching, redirects, rules, the link scanner and billing, and the Shopify review checklist for submission.

    • Automated tests for 404 tracking, matching, redirects, wildcard rules, the link scanner, the catalog, billing, emails, webhooks and Help & Support.
    • Shopify review checklist prepared, covering the scope behind each permission, no protected customer data, a theme app embed instead of theme code edits, signed and rate-limited tracker requests, billing through Shopify with a free plan, redirects made only by the merchant or by settings they control, and emails they can switch off.
    • QA continues alongside development, and the checklist’s final checks run before SEO 404 Redirect is submitted to Shopify.

  5. September 2026: 404 tracking and matching

Development update: SEO 404 Redirect records every 404 on your store and scores each broken URL against your live pages, with a confidence and a reason.

Work on SEO 404 Redirect started with finding broken links as visitors and search engines hit them.

    • Every 404, tracked: a theme app embed runs only on your 404 page. It records the broken path and the page that linked to it, with no cookies and no IP addresses.
    • Matching: each broken URL is compared with your live products, collections, pages and blog posts (same handle, copy numbers, moved type, shared words and typos). Each match gets a confidence score and a reason.
    • Real 301s: every redirect is one of Shopify’s own URL redirects. You can see it in Shopify admin, and it keeps working even if you uninstall the app.
    • Automatic redirects: matches of 95% or more are redirected for you. So are products, collections, pages and posts whose handle changed. Deleted products and collections go to their collection, all products or the home page.

  6. The idea and the plan

Where SEO 404 Redirect started: catch every broken link on a Shopify store and fix it with a real 301 redirect, before visitors and search rankings are lost.

The idea: renamed products, deleted collections and old platform URLs leave Shopify stores full of 404s. Visitors hit dead ends, and search engines drop the pages. We wanted every 404 found and fixed, mostly without the merchant lifting a finger.

    The plan we started from:

    • Shopify’s own 301 redirects, so every fix works for every visitor and crawler, and stays if the app is uninstalled.
    • A tracker that runs only on the 404 page, recording the broken path but never the person: no cookies, no IP addresses.
    • A match for every broken URL, with a confidence score and a reason, and strong matches redirected automatically.
    • Free to track, with paid plans for the tools that big catalogs and migrations need.
